1927 :: Death of Mrs. U.P. Melton

The body of Mrs. U.P. Melton, who died Sunday in Del Rio, was brought to Rockdale Monday afternoon on the Sunshine Special under escort of her husband and his friend, Mr. York, and tenderly conveyed to the home of old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Isaacs. . . . interment was made in the Old City Cemetery. . . . Mr. and Mrs. Melton lived in Rockdale twenty-odd years ago, when Mr. Melton was with the old firm of Isaacs & Lockett. . . . It was while here that they lost their only child, a bright nineteen months old baby boy. The mother was laid to rest beside him . . . 1927 :: Texas Man Dies After Accident

Dallas Morning News.  Rockdale, Tex., Dec. 27. -- E.I. Wade, postmaster at Rockdale, died about 11 o'clock last night on an operating table in a Cameron hospital following injuries sustained in the street in front of the Rockdale postoffice about 10 o'clock when struck by a hit-and-run automobile. No trace of the automobile which killed Mr. Wade had been obtained at an early hour this morning. Funeral services are being held at Rockdale this afternoon. 1927 :: Rockdale Lays Plans for Celebration

Rockdale, Tex., June 25. -- Carlyle Post No. 358, American Legion, is sponsoring a big one-day Fourth of July celebration at Rockdale fair park, on Monday, July 4. The program will open with a band concert at 8:30 a.m. Excellent entertainment features have been provided, including horse racing, goat roping, baseball games and other activities. The festivities will close with a dance at the open-air fair park pavilion, which begins at 9 o'clock p.m. Bartlett Tribune and News, July 1, 1927

1927 :: Death of Frank Dreher

Rockdale, Texas, Dec. 9. -- The body of Frank Dreher, who died in an army hospital in Arkansas, was brought to Rockdale and burial was made in the Sharp Cemetery, ten miles from here. Carlysle Post No. 358, American Legion, had charge of the services. Dreher was a World War veteran. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. W.J. Dreher; his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Cannon Dreher, and three small children. Dallas Morning News, December 10, 1927

1927 :: Rockdale Highway Bridge is Opened

Rockdale, Milam Co., Texas, July 5. -- The State Highway bridge on West Cameron street, which spans Ham Branch, the stream that separates the town proper from College Hill, was opened to traffic Monday, when hundreds of autoists passed over it out to Fair Park to participate in the Fourth of July festivities. 

The City Council recently let the contract to the Pace-Davis Company for the building of two new concrete bridges over the stream, one to be on West Bell, the other on North Ackerman street. Work will begin within the next few days. The estimated cost of the Bell street bridge is $3,000 while the new Ackerman bridge work will run close to $2,000. Dallas Morning News, July 6, 1927
