1933 :: Old-Time Negro Resident is Buried here Tuesday

Will Gray, one of the old-time negro residents of Rockdale, was buried here Tuesday. At the time of his death and for the past ten or fifteen years, Gray had been porter on the passenger trains of the Missouri-Pacific, running from Palestine to San Antonio. In the early days of this city he worked for the firm of Ben Loewenstein & Bros. He had the esteem of many friends in this city. 1921 :: Soldier Boy's Funeral to be Held Tomorrow

The funeral of Private Hicks R. Carlile will be held tomorrow. The remains are due to arrive on the 2:40 p.m. I. & G. N. train from San Antonio. Mayor H.C. Meyer was requested by the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night to take charge of the details of the funeral, which assures that the young hero will be shown due respect by our citizenship. The funeral will be under the auspices of the American Legion, and the body will be buried with military honors. Interment will be held at the Hamilton Chapel burying ground. Company E "Milam County Guards", 4th Texas Cavalry. This company was organized at Cameron, Texas September 9, 1861 and mustered into Confederate service for the war at San Antonio, Texas September 24, 1861. It was discharged in Burleson County, Texas May 22, 1865. Commanded by Captains Charles Buckholts and Joseph H. Long.

Company D "San Andres Light Horse Company", 4th Texas Cavalry. This company was organized at San Andres, Milam County, Texas September 7, 1861 and mustered into Confederate service for the war at San Antonio, Texas September 16, 1861. It was discharged in Burleson County, Texas May 22, 1865. Commanded by Captains Charles M. Lesueur, Abner B. Parrott, and Henry G. Carter.

1925 :: Death of Miss Lottie Banzhaf

Rockdale, Texas, Oct. 15. -- Miss Lottie Banzhaf died at the Van Ormi Sanitarium [Bexar County]. Her father is George Banzhaf, Milam County farm agent. Miss Banzhaf's body was brought to Rockdale and the funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hood Caldwell, four miles north of Rockdale. Burial was made in the neighborhood cemetery. Miss Banzhaf has for several years been one of the Rockdale High School teachers. Dallas Morning News, October 16, 1925 

1930 :: Death of Mrs. Mary Neely Thompson

Rockdale, Texas, Oct. 3. -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Neely Thompson were held from the family home, the Rev. G.B. Carter, pastor of the Rockdale Methodist Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial was made in the new City Cemetery. She is survived by a son, Jess Thompson of Rockdale; a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Russell of San Antonio, and her mother, three brothers and five sisters. 1913 :: Killing of P H Burke

The body of Pleasant Burke, 36 years old, who was killed Tuesday afternoon during an affray at 628 East Commerce street, was sent to Liberty Hill for burial yesterday. A committee of the Scottish Rite Masons, of which he was a member, composed of A.J. Milheiser, S.P. Palmer, Ben Hovenor and P.D. Mathis, escorted the body to the train. 1891 :: Injured in a Quarry

Dallas Morning News, November 10, 1891. Beaumont, Tex., Nov. 9. -- At Rockdale to-day Pete Nelson, foreman, and A.P. Mereno, a Mexican, were seriously hurt in blasting a rock quarry, Mr. Nelson so much so as to be unable to be moved. A.P. Mereno was carried to San Antonio.

1931 :: Death of John H. Bickett

San Antonio, Texas, Aug. 21. -- Funeral services will be held Saturday for John H. Bickett Sr., former chairman of the Texas Prison Commission and former member of the State Highway Commission. Mr. Bickett, long prominent in Texas politics and Sheriff and County Treasurer of Milam County before he moved to San Antonio from Cameron twenty-one years ago, died at his home after several years' ill health. He was a past president of the Texas Sheriffs' Association. A native of Abbeville County, South Carolina, he moved to Texas in 1897. From 1915 to 1919 Mr. Bickett was chairman of the Prison Commission. Later he served under two Governors as member of the Highway Commission. Besides his wife, survivors include four sons, John H., L.M., Brandon and E.W. Bickett, San Antonio; a daughter, Mrs. Elliott Brockenbrough, Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Etheridge and Mrs. Elizabeth Burnett, Cameron.
